Hi,
Is it possible to install a SQL 2008 R2 evaluation copy on a machine thas has a SQL 2008 STD edition installed on it already?

They both share the same major version so you can do a side-by-side install but some of the components will be upgraded to SQL Server 2008 R2.

I have just installed a cluster with a sql server 2008 r2 instance, now I'm trying to install a new istance with sql 2008 (not r2) and the setup fail while installing setup support tools.

Is possibile to install a sql 2008 instance after a sql 2008 r2 or there are some incompatiblity with support tools?

The errore I have is:

Gail Shaw recommended that I install regular 2k8 first, then R2 second, just to be on the safe side. I don't know if there are issues, but I'd take her sage advice as gospel in a case like this.

It's pretty much a golden rule with Microsoft products in general, install in chronological order. ie Office 2007 before office 2010 if you need both, SQL 2005 before SQL 2008. Often stuff breaks or behaves badly when done the other way around.
