Unexpected page breaks with subreports

  • I have a main report that has 7 subreports on it. If I run each of the subreports separately the reports each fit on 1 page. When I make them a subreport on my main report and run the main report, my 7 page report explodes to like 22 pages. The subreports have blank pages before and after and some just have a title or a piece of the report on it. I've checked the margins and each report has the same margins set. Any ideas?

One more thing I forgot to add - It's when I export the report to PDF that all the extra pages show up.

  • Hi can you check is there any space between the sub-reports.? if so delete that and align the sub-reports so that it wont overlap, the give page break after each sub-report.

Also export is into excel and see whether you are getting any additional page there.. if not it could be pdf setup issue I doubt.

    Thanks & Regards,
    MC

  • I've removed all the subreports except for 1. The only one left is a simple cover page with a couple text boxes. But when I export to pdf it goes to 2 pages with the first being the cover page and the second is blank.

subreport - pagesize 11x8.5, no margins, body size 11in

main report - pagesize 11x8.5, no marginns, body size 11in

I've checked all the textboxes of the subreport and there are no page breaks.

  • Ok.. if there is main report and one sub report, then if you apply page break, it will be in two different page only right..? Main report in one and sub report in other.. remove the blank area at the bottom of the report body.

  • One thing that's help me find the culprit when using subreports is using coloured borders. if you use a different colour around each object it may show you what object is making the report come out on two pages. I know I've fought for hours on things like this.

If you export to excel the extra space may show up as an extra very thin column. Again, it may show you where the extra space is being added.

As an "plan B" what about making the subreport 10 pixels smaller (5 left, 5 right) and then centering it?

  • I'll give the border thing a shot.

I also recreated the coverpage subreport and the main report in 2005. And they both work as expected. I transfered them to 2008 and ran the report and it works fine. Problem is I don't want to go back and recreate the other 7 rdl's in 2005 and then switch them to 2008.

  • I finally got it to work. I exported to excel and saw a column that was pretty wide. So I changed the width of the main report to fit the size of the subreport container (3.1 in). And now each subreport prints on 1 page. I don't understand why it works but it does.

    Thanks for all your help.
