Error installing SQL Express 2008 SP1 on (Vista 64-bit Ultimate PC SP2) that has SQL Express 2008 Advanced Services installed

  • Hi folks 🙂

Basically, just recently I installed SQL Express 2008 Advanced Services. This seems to go OK, so I downloaded and attempted to install SP1.

Eventually I got the following error message:

SQL Server installation failed. To continue, investigate the reason for the failure, correct the problem, uninstall SQL Server, and then rerun SQL Server Setup.

When I had a look at the Detail.txt file, near the end of the file were the following entries:

    2009-09-26 15:26:25 Slp: ----------------------------------------------------------------------

    2009-09-26 15:26:25 Slp:

2009-09-26 20:53:41 Slp: Detected localization resources folder: 1033

I had a look at the Registry for the above path:

    (HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\PCHealth\ErrorReporting\DW)

but there is no subkey called "Installed".

This has me mystified, so if anybody can give some advice, I would really appreciate it. I have done a Google on the error, but I couldn't find anything helpful.

One idea has come to mind - open the registry and add the subkey, but what do I use for a value?

    Kind regards

    Ross 🙂

  • Hello,

I am a newbie to the forum.

I am installing Sql Server Express 2008 (English) on Windows XP (with an Italian OS).

I fixed all previous problems ... now

I have the same problem and I am struggling...

because I cannot find any details/solutions about it.

    Can someone help me please?

    Thank you very much.

  • Hi e4chats

I found a solution to the problem.

You have to download & install SP1 of the FULL version of SQL Server (not the EXPRESS version).

Apparently SP1 of the full version detects that you have the EXPRESS edition and installs the appropriate components.

    Hope that works for you.

    Kind regards

    Ross
