We all know one should monitor database growth, keep track of historical trends in database size, track average server CPU utilization, maybe version control scripts representing the databases and users, check event logs daily, etc, etc,.....
I have written VB scripts to track database growth and then copied and pasted (manually!) the output into a spreadsheet. It works but I'm tired of that "half ***", adhoc, approach to managing a team of sql servers. What tools, or better a unified suite, can you recommend that would capture info, both current and historical, of interest to the DBA. We have both physical and virtual sql servers. (sql2000 -> sql2008). The majority of our servers are for OLTP but we do have 2 OLAP ones.

By SCOM do you mean Microsoft Systems Center Operations Manager?
Is there a document indicating what SCOM offers to the DBA?
