SQL 2005 Express Server will not start up in configuration manager

  • Hi all,

I hope this finds you well.

I have what can only be described as a disasterous scenario. I have spent months on building a database using microsoft sql server 2005 express, on a vista laptop.

I started the server using the configuration manager. All of a sudden, the manager cannot start up the sql server (but the sql server browser seems to be running fine).

Any thoughts? I have exhausted the permissioning possibility... if I re-install will it lose all of my data?

    With my best,

    Mark

  • What error messages are you getting when you try to start SQL?

Look for the file “Errorlog,” which SQL generates. It may be in the default path, something like C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL.1\MSSQL\LOG\. It may give you a clue about why SQL is failing to start.

Also, look for errors in the application log of the event viewer.
