Management Studio 2008 vs 2005

  • Hi All,

Having problems with Vista and sql management studio 2005, while running visual studio 2008 on the machine as well. Was wondering if i install the 2008 management studio will i be able to create and deploy ssis packages to sql server 2005? is the management studio backwards compatible? or do i have to have the client tools for 2005 installed?

    N.

  • If you're creating the SSIS packages in 2008, you won't be able to deploy them to 2005. I also strongly recommend you DO NOT install 2008 alongside 2005 just yet. There have been a lot of issues with this over the last several months.

  • From what i read, if you create an ssis package in 2008 and set the framework version to 2.0 it is suppose to be deployable to 2005. Is this a theory that it works and just doesnt work in practice yet?

  • I haven't tried that yet. I suppose it will work if documentation says so. It's not one of these places I like to take chances with.

  • I just tried. I was unsuccessful running the package. It deployed, but it errors. My SQL 2005 machine is running sp2 and CU 6.

The documentation suggests it will work, but I think they have some compatibility issues to work out that you will find involving having your 2008 tools and 2005 server running very specific service packs.

And yes, the side-by-side thing is still not working quite right. As well as the uninstall, so don't do the side-by-side install on a machine you cannot reload the OS on later. Hopefully they will release some kind of malicious software removal tool for SQL 2008 RC 0.

  • Ok. cheers for the information. Rebuild and scrap 2008 for the moment then..

  • I had a problem installing SQL Server 2008 Management studio on Windows XP, with an error (http://cid-b712073b3513eb8e.office.live.com/self.aspx/.Public/SQLManagementStudio%5E_x86%5E_ENU.exe-setup%20error.JPG) appearing as soon as I ran the setup program.

Since I had Visual Studio 2008 and Visual Studio 2010 installed side-by-side, both SQL Server 2008 and SQL Server 2005 are installed on the same machine and I am going to uninstall both Visual Studio 2008 and SQL Server 2005 to avoid the issues purported in this thread.

Any ideas how to go about installing SQL Server 2008 Management Studio, please? Has anyone else encountered similar issues?

    :hehe:
