Add/Remove Programs - SQL Server 2005 option disappeared

  • I have Windows XP Pro w/SP-2, and SQL Server 2005 Developer Edition.

In Add/Remove Programs control panel, for SQL Server 2005 option I clicked Remove button which brought up a dialog box for removing SQL Server 2005... I clicked Cancel which exited the removal process, but the SQL Server 2005 option disappeared from Add/Remove programs. Now I want to remove SQL Server 2005 and re-install, but I don't have the option to remove any longer. Please help!

    Thanks in advance... Steve

  • Strange.

If you need to save databases, I'd copy those, then delete the mssql folder structure off the disk. Also in HKLM/Software, delete the Microsoft SQL Server keys. That should let you reinstall.

  • re run the SQL installer it should pick up any instances already on the pc, then run repair

  • I am having great difficulties getting rid of current SQL Server installation. I have done as suggested several times (because uninstall is not working): blowing away C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server folder and sub-folders, blowing away HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Microsoft SQL Server key and subkeys, and blowing away HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Microsoft SQL Server key and subkeys.

Uninstall fails with message box "The feature(s) specified are not valid for this edition of SQL Server".

Install fails at very last step (most important part) Workstation components, books and development tools. At moment of install failure, the tools setup log has following error messages:

I have searched many sites to try to figure out what this means, but not helping. Any ideas short of re-imaging my machine to get SQL Server completely off my machine? Could I have bad installation media?

FYI, I have no local databases yet; my company keeps all data on enterprise server boxes.

    Thanx... Steve

  • OK, I got it figured out.

    The key article was: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/909967

The key point in that article was the Windows Installer Cleanup utility. Even after everything that could be uninstalled was uninstalled, and Program Files and Registry entries for Microsoft SQL Server were blown away, there was still an entry in the Windows Installer that had to be blown away with the cleanup tool.

    Thanx... Steve
