Sql 2005 as VM and CPU Load Balancing

  • At this moment we are running SQL2005 Std as a virtual server with only 1 CPUs allocated due to a software limitations. Is it possible to create second virtual SQL server to share CPU loads when 1st one hits 100% and if so how would you do it?

  • I don't know for sure, but I think you would need SQL Enterprise Edition and then do a "virtual cluster". I'm not sure how much you would gain from this. What is the application limitation that limits SQL Server to 1 CPU? I've never heard of such a thing.

  • We are using Ms Virtual Server 2005 and Win 2003 Ent on both host and virtual machine.

Apparently that configuration allows you to use only 1 host CPU per 1 virtual machine.

This is why SQL has only 1 CPU allocated.

If you use Win 2008 as host and 2003 as VM you can use up to 2 CPUs and 4 CPUs with both Win 2008 installed.
