Optimal servers setup for SQLSvr05, SSRS05, IIS

  • First of all I hope I've put this into the correct forum area. (I previously posted this in Strategies, but thought that might not cover what I'm asking.)

I'm after some advice regarding what the optimal setup is for this sort of situation, as I'm sure it's something plenty of people will have done. We were thinking of getting a new infrastructure which is more maintainable that what we have. It is for use by ASP applications using SQL Server and Reporting Services 05.

    1. A clustered SQL Server 2005 setup will be at the centre of the data.

    2. From there would I be right in presuming that a seperate server which has IIS on to run the ASP applications, as well as the Reporting Services which are used.

And thus the SQL Server Cluster would sit behind the firewall, while the IIS server (with RS) wits in the DMZ.

Am I also right in thinking that the IIS server with RS05, would need it's own instance of SQL Server on it, to run RS on? And that could then look at the Cluster for the things it is reporting on?

So what I'm wondering, is, what is the best way to set up servers, for use of ASP, IIS, RS05 & A clustered SQLSS05?

    Many thanks,

    David

  • Sounds like you're on the right track.

I don't think you have to install SQL Server on the server with Reporting Services. I think you can install those separately. It's been a while since I set up Reporting Services, though, so I could be mis-remembering that. Other than that, the rest sounds like a pretty standard set-up.

Can anyone confirm that this is the case?
