SQL Server Backup Software

  • I have been tasked with looking for a backup software for SQL Server. The software must run on both SQL Server 2000 and 2005. The main business objectives of the software are: speed, compression, standardization, and optionally direct to TSM backups. Please recommend any software that has treated your companies well. I already know of SQL Litespeed, Red Gate, and SQLTDP.

  • We've used LiteSpeed for quite a while. Nothing spectacular to report. The tools is pretty solid. Quest has been adequate as a vendor. I've also tested RedGate's tool and found it to be pretty good. The only one I'm excited about though is HyperBac. I saw their demo at PASS and I've tested the tool out. It looks great, behaves great and the company has been very helpful. Unfortunately, LiteSpeed has been adequate so I can't convince my compatriots to take a look at HyperBac.

  • I'll look into HyperBac, hopefully I can schedule a demo for my company.

  • We use LiteSpeed, which is currently backing-up 1TB+ databases, so highly recommended!

    Hope this helps,

    Phillip

  • I think any of them will work well. Hyperbac is interesting in that the developers originally wrote Litespeed and this is an evolution for them in terms of lessons learned and a nice product.

  • I've used LiteSpeed for a little over 2 years, and while it gets the job done, it doesn't offer much in terms of central management capabilities (nice if you have a lot of servers). I recently switched over to RedGate's sql backup and couldn't be happier. We demoed and benchmarked Idera, Quest and Redgate. In terms of speed and compression, they're all very similar. It really comes down to what if anything you need above and beyond the normal backup/restore abilities.

I'd recommend downloading a demo of each and testing them in your environment to find out what suites you best.
