RAID channels in database design exam

    Reading through the test questions in the MS Exam book for 70-228 I was surprised to see how many questions related to hardware e.g. RAID channels an so forth. Yet the book didn't actually cover any of this information.

    How much of the exam is hardware based - enough to fail me and what's the best source of (written) information which will cover the exam's hardware requirements?

    Yes, you do need to know this stuff. It is not clear what exam you are talking about. 70-228 is Admin exam and 70-229 is Design exam. But it is REALLY important to understand RAIDs and hardware. I need it every day to go around my tasks. Last several times I needed it for: to plan for the new installations for applications, to make a decision if we may add another database to the current server, (very important) to avoid major data loss when RAID did not behave correctly (this was a fault with the previous model of a particula server brand, had it on more then one server)

    Please, read Part 2 of SQL Server 2000 Administrator's companion, this is the best explanationthat I read and you will be OK.

    Check out this link for a good review of the exam requirements:

    The Cramsession guide has a link to a MSDN article on RAID levels that should be helpful. At least three questions on the test are about RAID levels. If you miss more than seven questions you will fail the test.

    The MS Press book for 70-228 isn't very good - use the Que or Sybex book. Good luck...

    Most SQL Server books cover disk hardware. Try the administrators companion from ms press or inside sql 2k.  If you're going to administer a sql server you need a good understanding of hardware, esp raid types.
