We have a 2 node active/passive cluster, Windows 2003, SQL Server 2005. Should sp1 be added? I'm planning to apply it, but am a little nervous. I've read the ms directions, "Service Pack 1 for Microsoft SQL Server 2005". If this doesn't install correctly will I have to uninstall the whole cluster and reinstall it? If I follow the cluster part of the instructions will it be ok, has anyone had any good/bad experience to share?
Also, would you ever have to stop/start services in a cluster set-up? Is taking them offline the equivalent?

Why use SP1? SP2 is now out and that's what I would use. I don't have a 2005 cluster, so can't help with that. But I wouldn't apply SP1.

I have seen online a lot of issues with sp2, so I thought I would apply sp1 first. Is everything in sp1 covered by sp2 so you only have to apply the latest patch, not all of them?

I have some cluster experience but not with 2005. In 2000 basically you backup all dbs and stop all unneccessary services on the server and all user activity. Leave SQL Server up and start the SP apply on the active node of the cluster. It will apply it to that one and the passive cluster. Once complete it is best to reboot both nodes before user activity. I think 2005 has the same requirements.

I applied SP1 and SP2 on several clusters and never had any real issues. For the clustered services (DB Engine, AS) the SP installation will automatically upgrade both nodes. But keep in mind that for services like SSIS, RS and Notification Services plus the client tools, which are not clustered you need to manually apply the service pack on both nodes.
