Database create policy

  • Hi

I am trying to put together a document for users to complete when they ask for a database to be created on a server.  Firstly if anyone has a link to such a template that would be great otherwise I guess I can just put it together myself.

    This is what I currently have any suggestions welcome;

    Server Name:

    Name of the new database:

    Size:

    Username of the database owner

    Date in operation:

User Id's to be added :

User rights to be added :

    DTS packages to be created:

    Number of Jobs:

    Applications using database:

    Comments:

  • Some of the aspects will come with time.I am assuming you guys have a naming convention  so that users are not inclined to give you complete sentences including a period as the name of the database.Jobs and dts packages for the most part come with time .Not sure how big your company is or how diverse the requesters may be and will be inclined to talk with my company in mind

    Kindest regards

    Mike

  • Michael,

Size and sizing databases can be confusing for some people (it's also a bit of a black art in DBA'ing), it may be worth changing this to 'Approx number of initial rows/records', and 'Approx number of initial rows/records in 6 months', this may give you a better idea as to the actual physical size of the database they will need.

Is this purely for creating the empty database for developers to then create objects as they feel fit?  If so i've found it easier to add the developers to the 'Database Creators' role on a development server and give them a set of naming conventions, they can then do what they want on the dev server and when it comes to migration to a staging or production environment you are in a much better position to approximate the size, required users, DTS packages and Jobs that will need to be configured/created on your staging and production servers.

    Cheers,

    ll
