Use Encryption for Data (Project Data Link Properties)

  • Hello,

I've been searching for about an hour now and can not find an answer.I'm trying to find out if this will make it safe to transmit credit card numbers from the remote sql server to a client computer running the access project.  Can anyone tell me what setting "Use Encryption for Data" equal to true in the data link properties of an access project will do for me? What type of encryption it uses? Or even better where exactly I can find what all of the properties under the Data Link Properties window mean, because it's not in the access help system, and I couldn't find anything on it on microsoft's access website. Thanks.

P.S. Please do not say "It enables encryption for data". What I'm looking for is what data, and what encryption.

  • When you don't know what you are looking for, it's hard to find something isn't it ?

I'm not qualified to answer your question (haven't tried using encryption this way) but I have found some info which will set you in the right direction (I think)

This setting wil force encryption for login and data over the network wire using SSL. This means you are heading into the wonderful world of using certificates.

One MSoft article stated that SQL Server Profiler is able to read the encrypted data and display it, which I really hope is not true !

You need to have MDAC 2.6 or higher to use the DBNetLib library.

Maybe there is someone out there with real-world experience and is able to correct any misinformation I have provided...

The systems fine with no users loggged in. Can we keep it that way ?br>
