How to implement Standby Server on Failover

  • Hi,

Our site is hosted on a US Server. I would like to setup another server which takes up the role of the primary server when the original server fails. I have heard about the concepts of Clustering, log shipping, replication. but i would like to know in detail how these concepts work. Which is the best concept for dual server. there should not be any human intervention in failover. The two servers must exist on different systems of same configuration.

    Thank you

  • Only clustering can give you automatic failover capability without human intervention. Replication and Log shipping cannot give you failover capability.

  • Or you could look at something like this:

    http://portal2.legato.com/products/costandbyserver/sql/

We just installed it at a client site and are watching it carefully.

    Pros:

    - No intervention required on failover

    - Once it's config'd and set up, there seems to be zero administration required

    Cons:

    - The UI, which has been redesigned for this version, just plain sucks and is actually counterintuitive in places

    - If considering a purchase, read the support terms carefully.  It turns out that our purchase through a reseller included zero support, available only at extra cost.

    - There is absolutely no self-support available on the vendor's website -- no knowledge base, user support groups, etc.  You must purchase a support contract to access this content.

    - The included documentation is less than stellar

    - Installation can be tricky, applying patches even more so (at least in our experience).

I don't know if there are similar products available, one of our guys here had used an earlier version of the same product before it was acquired by Legato and had a good experience with it.  As long as Legato hasn't messed around with the core product, it should work as advertised.
