virtual backups of system dbs after fresh install SS2K5 sp3

  • I just installed SS2K5 with sp3 last week. I notice some system database backups in the log. I am wondering if anyone knows what these are? The first seems to be part of the install, at least the timeframe is about when I installed. The other two sets seem to be scheduled at 2300. Then it stopped and has not done it again. Does this always happen?

My best guess is that it's an internal test/twitch to make sure that its right arm is indeed attached.

  • 'Virtual DEVICE' suggests a third party backup tool which does hot backups of the databases directly off the server. Is such a tool installed as part of your standard build?

These messages are not part of a typical installation process.

  • I haven't seen these either. Perhaps someone has BackupExec or some other third party product running. Check with other sys admins.

  • Thanks for the comments.

I just installed another instance. No backups this time. I'll monitor and report in this thread.

BTW this is on a Windows 2003 on 64 bit box. I read up on the virtual device lead and my sql writer and volume shadow service are not started. Do 3rd party backups work without these services?

  • I had the same thing happen on a new SQL Server 2008 install. I posted a thread here:

however I can't find any information at all on this topic, nor anything that would give me a clue as to why these happen. If I do I'll let you know.
