Log Shipping Monitor

  • I need to setup log shipping between two SQL Server 2005 Standard servers. Easy enough, but then one of the programmers asked me how big the monitor server box needed to be.

And that got me to thinking: Is it crucial that the monitor be on a third box, or does that just add a layer of complexity that may be justified in some cases and not in others? If I'm not worried about automatic failover - promoting the secondary to primary - in very low-latency periods, e.g. less than a minute, why wouldn't I just put the monitor on the secondary?

    Any opinions?

  • Hi David,

If your secondary server fails and you have the monitor on there, then you won't be notified that logshipping has gone out of synch - unless you have other alerts set up of course. The monitor box doesn't need to be very high spec at all and it's easy enough to configure.

  • If its going to be just your monitor server the a desktop level server would be fine. but assure to run without any load othe.
