Dual install S2k5 and 2000 issue

  • Hi,

I have 2000 and 2005 installed on my machine in work and when I look at the version of my local instance it is 2000.

is there an easy way to upgrade the local instance to 2005 or a simple check to see if there's a local instance for 2005 installed.

I hope this question isn't too vague.

The reason why i ask is because I am trying to install a custom .net framework that points to my local instance and it expects that instance to be 2005.

    Any help welcome.

    Thanks

  • Your default instance is 2000 and a 2005 is a named instance.

If you open SQL Server service manager you can see both instances or you can browse to Program Files.

    C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\80 = sql 2000

    C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\90 = sql 2005

In 2005 setup you get an option to upgrade exsiting instance but since you already installed it just backup and restore from 2000 to 2005.

  • turns out i only have a 2000 default instance 🙁

Is there a way to upgrade the 2000 instance without reverting back to the install CD?

    any help welcome,

  • When you run sql 2005 setup it will ask you if you would like to install as default instance.

Choose default instance and the next option will ask you if that's the version you want to upgrade.
