The Reuters Market Data System appears to be using StreamBase although it is not clear if other DBMSs are supported.

Congratulations to Dr. Stonebraker, who has developed four DBMS with significant advances over the state of the art of the time: Ingres, Illustra, StreamBase, and Vertica.

Steve, I think that you're correct in pointing out the use of Intel chips as one of the most interesting features of this system. Intel is definitely positioning itself to be the "chip of choice" for hardcore (no pun intended) multi-tasking on a grand scale. The following article is just a little dated (2006), but it presents Intel's vision well.

Of course, since Microsoft has one of the best historical relationships with Intel, it would make sense to work on the assumption that Windows operating systems will best harness the power of the chips, and that Microsoft products such as SQL Server will be best at harnessing Windows. Future releases of Windows will have as a main feature the optimal utilization of many-cored processors. Based on this article, though, apparently SUN has been working hard on developing a relationship with Intel, too. It will be interesting to see where things go...

That's pretty cool, it would be interesting to learn more about the underlying system and how it handles transactions and recovery. I know I wouldn't be too keen on being the head admin of such a system! 😛

I just found out that our ERP system is not transactionally-safe: if the app server fails during a batch run, I get to do a point in time recovery. Not a happy camper, but at least I maintain good backups. I guess that's a pretty common problem when you run into applications designed to run against a variety of database back ends.
