Upgrade from SQL 2000 SP3 to SQL 2005

    Ran into an issue this weekend that I could find no resolution to, so we canceled the upgrade. If anyone has seen this issue, I would very much appreciate if you could let me know how it was resolved.

    The upgrade from SQL 2000 SP3 to SQL 2005 was blocked with no messages, simply "Upgrade Blocked" with "Database Engine" in the dialogue box. I could not get Upgrade Advisor to run (which should have been a clue, but that's not an unusual occurrence), and at the point of the error I started getting .NET errors. Tried uninstalling/reinstalling .NET, letting SQL install whatever .NET it wanted, tried using several different loads of SQL and of .NET, etc. No luck. The 3 errors, from Windows Event viewer, that we kept getting are:

    1)Faulting application bpacmd.exe, version 2005.90.1399.0, stamp 434f5c06, faulting module unknown, version 0.0.0.0, stamp 00000000, debug? 0, fault address 0x008f2190.

    2)EventType clr20r3, P1 bpacmd.exe, P2 2005.90.1399.0, P3 434f5c06, P4 bpacmdx, P5 9.0.242.0, P6 434f5c04, P7 7, P8 7a, P9 system.accessviolationexception, P10 NIL.

    3)Faulting application uacmd.exe, version 9.0.1399.0, stamp 434f5c5b, faulting module kernel32.dll, version 5.2.3790.4062, stamp 46264680, debug? 0, fault address 0x0000bee7.

    One last note - I ran a test upgrade (twice) of the instance on a test box that also had Server 2003 SP2, and it ran perfect. This led me to believe that it was not a database issue.

    We have decided to build out 2 new boxes - so I am not in a hurry for the answer - but it sure is bugging me.

    Are you using correct installation CD or media file as I see the version as

    2005.90.1399.0 in the error messages.

    The above file version is for RTM version.

    You are correct, I was using the media for SQL 2005 and was planning to apply SP2 afterwards. The matrix - unless I am reading it wrong - says that I can go from SQL 2000 Standard SP3 or higher to SQL 2005 Standard ed.

    I meant the media should be for SQL Server 2005 standard or enterprise edition not for RTM one.
