Is there a way to tel precisely when a data file has auto-grown? I know it was over the last 2 weeks but I'd like to be more exact to see it I can determine if this did indeed cause Error: 17883 as MicroSoft says AUTOGROW can be one of the symptoms to raise this error.

You can set up a profiler trace, under Database, there are Data File Autogrow and Log File Autogrow events.
Hope this helps.

We've been getting the 17883 (which have many causes) as well. I will share all the info I know.

I found this to be very helpful. It send you an Alert when any file (log or data file) grows on your SQL Server.
