white circle

  • All,I signed on to my sql servers and noticed that there is a empty white circle instead of the green triangle or red square. I can run everything fine but when I right click, the option to start or stop the server is grayed out. Again, I can run scripts fine. What can this be? I've never encountered this before.

    thanks

  • When you registered the SQL Servers, I'm assuming you did so with Windows authentication. Did your Windows rights change on the servers themselves? If you aren't a member of the administrators or power users group on the servers, you wouldn't normally have the rights to stop and start any services, to include SQL Server.

  • If your account is not a member of the local Administrators group on the target server, you may get this issue.  KB 171862 describes this problem and gives a solution for NT4.  We have tried the solution on our W2003 boxes but with no success.
