1. Does replication work effectively (read... properly and worth
considering) between MSDE and SQL Server 2000?
2. Does it need to be a specific kind (merge, etc.)?
Mobile data scenario: A laptop needs to allow remote data/entry via an MSDE based application while corporate users work simultaneous on the main system (SQL Server
2000). Data collected in the field needs to be synchronized with corporate upon return (upload and download).

Yes, the desktop engine could participate in merger and snapshot replication as a subscriber/publisher but could only be a subscriber in transactional replication.
In your scenario, you could set up merge replication to synchronize your data.

Agree. Merge would be the best for you.
